Indian Range

 

Location: on the east side of Scotchman’s Creek; lying and being in Cecil County at the Head of Bohemia River and on the south side of the cart road leading from Bohemia Landing to Appoquinimink Landing; the original bounded tree did stand on the north side of the cart road afd and on the west side of the old Delaware Road near where they cross each other; it intersects with an elder tract of land called Stockton in the possession of Bartholomew Jacobs; it also intersects with another tract of land called Skelton in the possession of Jacob Jacobs

 

1672 - Richard Leake – “Indian Range” – 300 acres

 

4 March 1672/3 - Hanse Peterson and James Watson bought 300 acre tract called Indian Range from Richard Leake.

 

6 Aug 1674 - 300 acres called the Indian Range bought from Richard Leake by Hance Peterson and James Watson. James Watson sold his part of the land to Bartholomew Henrickson. Hance Peterson, of Cecil Co., planter, to Bartholomew Henrickson, 100 acres of land adjoining Bartholomew’ Henrickson’s land part of 300 acres called the Indian Range.

Hance Peterson, of Cecil Co., planter, to Bartholomew Henrickson, 100 acres of land adjoining Bartholomew’ Henrickson’s land part of 300 acres called the Indian Range bought from Richard Leake by Hance Peterson and James Watson. James Watson sold his part of the land to Bartholomew Henrickson. Made 6 Aug 1674. Wit: John Gilbert, Thomas Sadler. Ackn: 17 Aug 1675.

1721 - P. 386. Deed. John Ward of Cecil Co., son of William Ward, late of said county, deceased, for the natural affection he has for his well beloved brother William Ward of said county, carpenter, and also for 20 shillings, 50 acres of land where the said William Ward the son now lives, part of a tract called Harman’s Mount. Said land was purchased 13 Mar 1675 by his deceased father from Cornelius Vison and his wife Elinor. Also another tract of land by land formerly taken up by Thomas Rumsey, called the Indian Range on the east side of Scotchman’s Creek taken up by John Hagley late of said county, deceased, by assignment of a warrant from Wm. Hemsley, Sr. of Talbot Co., deceased, dated 18 Jul 1683, later purchased by William Ward the father. Made 20 Apr 1721. Wit: Thomas Marcer, William Rumsey. Ackn: same day. JPs: Jno. Dowdall, Ephra. Aug. Herman. Rec: 4 Oct 1721. S. Knight, Clerk.

 

 

1749 - David Witherspoon – 1749 – “Indian Range” - 440 acres

 

5 Dec 1748

By virtue of a special warrant of Escheat bearing date this 24th day of October Anno Dom One Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty-eight granted by his Lordship Agent for Land Affairs unto David Witherspoon of Newcastle County in the province of pensylvania for the resurveying a tract of land called Indian Range lying and being in Cecil County at the Head of Bohemia River and on the south side of the cart road leading from Bohemia Landing to Appoquinimink Landing originally on the fourteenth day of August Anoo Dom 1683 Survey for a certain Richard Leake for 500 acres who the afd warrant says died possessed of the afd of the 500 acres intestate and without heirs by which means the petitioner apprehended the same to be escheat and for as much as he being the first discoverer and desirous to purchase the same be it escheat by the means afd or by any other ways or means whatsoever therefore prayed (?) the afd warrant to resurvey the afd tract with liberty to add any contiguous vacancy thereto, therefore in pursuance of the afd warrant by John Veazey Surveyor of Cecil County under Benjamin Tasker Esq. Surveyor General of the Eastern Shore do humbly certify that forward in the name of David Witherspoon I have resurveyed the afd tract called Indian Range according to the original metes and bounds and by virtue of said warrant have laid it clear of Elder (?) surveys and have added thereto all the contiguous vacancies adjoining and have included the whole into one intire tract. Beginning at a post for town in or near where the original bounded tree did stand on the north side of the cart road afd and on the west side of the old Delaware Road near where they cross each other and from thence running west south west one hundred and twenty five per then south by east three hundred and thirty six per where it intersects with an elder tract of land called Stockton in the possession of Bartholomew Jacobs then North by East one hundred and sixty per to the beginning tree of said Stockton. Then East by South sixty six per. Then South by East two hundred and sixty nine per then West By North one hundred thirty one per then South by East one hundred twenty one per where it intersects with another tract of land called Skelton in the possession of Jacob Jacobs then East South East Seventy two per then South South West fifty five per; then East North East ninety one per; then North By West six hundred and forty per; to the place of beginning thereby closing the original survey containing clear of elder surveys three hundred and seven acres. Also beginning at the poor and place afd for the outbound for the whole tract there in one hundred and thirty three acres of vacant land and from thence running south west one hundred and twenty five per; then south by east three hundred thirty six per; where it intersects with Stockton afd; Then north by east one hundred sixty per; to sd beginning tree of Stockton afd; then East by South sixty six per; Then south by east two hundred sixty nine per; Then West by North One Hundred Thirty One per; Then South by East one hundred twenty nice per; before it intersects with Jacob Jacobs land afd;

 

 

I further certify that there is an about 6 or 7 acres of cultivated land with S… indifrint fence. The land is indifrint good forrest pretty much broken with branches, and there is on the vacancy 8 or 9 acres of cultivated land under a good fence. Certified by John Veazey.
