Middle Neck or Little Bohemia

 

• Ephraim Augustine Herman

 

• 1726 Joshua George purchased 1000 acres called “Little Bohemia” on the Bohemia River from Ephraim Augustine Herman.

 

• Sidney George Jr. was the heir of his father Sidney George Sr. (old Joshua’s eldest son who married Sarah dyer, descendant of the illustrious and notorious Dyer family of Boston and Rhode Island – all descendants of Mary Dyer, the famous Quaker martyr, hanged on Boston Common in 1660 for preaching the Quaker faith. Sidney George Jr. was now owner of all the George property in Middleneck (“Little Bohemia”). The marriage of Sidney George Jr. and Mary Louttit merged together the Louttit and George land holdings. Louttit holdings included Painter’s Rest and Pullen’s Refuge.

 

 

Abstracts of Cecil County, Maryland 1734-1753

 

Deed of gift. Henry Penington of Fredericktown on Sassafras River, yeoman, to settle a dispute and for natural love and affection he has for his brother Robert and for 5 shillings, to Robert Penington of the same place, innholder, 50 acres, part of a tract of land called Happy Harbor by a tract called Buntington and by land formerly belonging to Jarvis Morgan called Middle Neck. This land was devised to him by the Last Will and Testament dated 4 Mar 1708 of his deceased father Robert Penington which was devised to him by the Last Will and Testament of his brother John Penington, deceased, about 1696. Also 70 acres of land, part of a tract called Buntington, bounded according to a deed of release from John Copson to the said Henry Penington. Buntington was given to the said Robert Penington [the father?] by deed of gift dated 5 Oct 1711 from Ann Penington, his mother. A dispute between Henry and Robert Penington arose about the bounds and the title of the tract called Buntington which was originally granted by patent dated 7 Oct 1667 to Abraham Strand, as well as a part of the tract called Happy Harbor originally granted by patent dated 10 Apr 1671 to Richard Leak for 400 acres. Assignment of Lease. George Scott of Kent County, cordwainer, for 50 pounds to William Knight of Cecil County, gent., a lease of 126 acres of land called Scott’s Tanyard, except what is set aside for the use of Walter Scott, for the terms and conditions in the lease. By a lease dated 26 Mar 1722, Ephraim Augustine Herman of Cecil Co., gent., leased to Walter Scott of the same county, cordwainer, 126 acres of land called Scott’s Tanyard, part of Middle Neck or Little Bohemia, on St. Augustine’s Creek and by tracts called Clifton, Arsmore, and Heath’s Fifth Parcel. Lease was for the term of 3 natural lives and yearly rent of 18 shillings and 2 dunghill fowls due every 23 Nov. Walter Scott assigned the lease 10 Mar 1731 to his son George Scott, reserving to himself for his natural life the free use of the back house, the mill, and half the tanyard. Made & Ackn. 1 May 1738. Deed. George Greenwood of Kent Co., planter, and his wife Barbara, for 35 pounds, to John Cooper Jr. of Cecil Co., planter, 150 acres of land on the north side of Sassafras River at Duck Creek and Jones Creek. Said land is part of a tract of 600 acres sold by James Moore to Hezekiah Haynes and which Jervis Morgan, late of Ann Arundel Co., deceased, called Middle Neck. [Barbara’s name is also spelled Barbary.] Made and Ackn: 1 May 1742. Wit. & JPs: John Baldwin, Peregrin Ward, Exchange of money was witnessed by Peregrine Ward and Jas. Holliday, Jr. John Cooper paid the alienation fine to John Lusby. Rec.: 13 Oct. 1742. Wm. Knight, Clerk.
