From the booklet published in 1967 by the women of St. Stephen's Church, funded by Marguerite du Pont de Villiers Boden: Vulcan's Rest, later known as Strawberry Hill, lies on a cove of Little Bohemia River called St. Augustine Creek, and adjoins land of St. Francix Xavier Catholic Church. Dr. Hugh Matthews, Jr., grandfather of Kitty Knight, purchased the property from James Douglas in 1757. He died on the farm in June 1774 and is buried on the property. The "Tomb Board" is now in the Archives of Old Bohemia. Dr. Matthews willed the property to the Morton family. The Matthews and Knights were among Cecil County's first families. The name "Strawberry Hill." was probably derived from the large orchard of tiny red apples having the flavor of strawberries and not much larger than a plum. Strawberry Hll was also known for its wharf where lime and phosphate were delivered by boat to the farmer; for bathing and boating in the summertime and for fox hunting in the wintertime. In 1967 the property was owned by Carl Hanford, trainer of Kelso; Mrs. Sydney Glass resided in the house.

As of 2009, the house has been restored and is privately owned. Its owners have changed its name back to Vulcan's Rest.
