Worsell Manor
Worsell Manor is located near Warwick, next to the Rounds. The name appears to trace its origin back to the vicinity of Warwick, England, the family home of the Heath family, early owners of Worsell Manor. The first owner was Major Peter Sayer, who was probably a descendant or other relative of William Saire, one of the gentlemen founders who came with the first colony to Maryland in the Ark and Dove.
• In 1683 Lord Baltimore granted to Peter Sayer a tract of 1000 acres called “Worsell Manor.” The larger portion of this tract was situated in Maryland and the remainder in Appoquinimink Hundred, Delaware. It afterwards came into the possession of James Heath, who was buried on the land. The inscription on his tombstone is as follows: “Here lyes the body of Mr. James Heath. Who was born att Warwick on the 27 day of July, 1658, and dyed the 10th day of November, 1731, in the seventy-fourth year of his age. Reqviescat in Pace.” It was his desire to be buried in Maryland but the line run between the states in 1768 places his remains on Delaware soil.
